Spending Scorecard
Forget guilt-fueled budgeting. This is a slower, more thoughtful way to understand and change your spending. Use it alongside Learn the Basics to build a budget around what your money is actually doing.
How It Works
Start with last month where all account statements are available. Record every expense in the printable worksheet or a spreadsheet.
For each transaction, track:
- Date, amount, description
- Want-to-Need Rating (1-5 stars)
- Joy Rating (1-5 stars)
- Notes
Want-to-Need Scale
- 5 stars = Essential (housing, work transportation, healthy groceries)
- 3 stars = Helpful but flexible (larger apartment, convenient purchases)
- 1 star = Pure want (entertainment, treats, impulse buys)
Joy Scale
- 5 stars = Worth every penny, would do again
- 1 star = Regret, waste of money
You decide what matters. No judgment, blame, or shame. Just honesty with yourself.
The Process
Complete this for three consecutive months. After three months, compare your first month to your third. You will notice your spending naturally shifts as you understand what you truly value.
